    Method of starting an ice hockey game, in which the referee drops the puck between two opposing players standing one stick length apart with stick blades flat on the ice. Players attempt to gain control of the puck after it is dropped between their sticks onto a face-off spot on the ice. It is used to begin each period or to resume play when it stopped for other reasons.
